In the morning, I was alone. Apparently sneaking away from lycans was easier than sneaking up on werewolves, because Kael had managed to both pick me up off the floor and lay me on the bed, and then had slipped away without me noticing.

And I could have stayed there all day, warm and wrapped in the covers that still smelled like him.

But I knew there were other things I needed to do.

So I got up. I grabbed a sweatshirt from Kael’s closet and threw it on; I was still trying to work my arms through the sleeves when I opened the door, and I was greeted immediately by the sight of Carrick walking down the hallway. By the way his eyes lit up when he saw my face, I got the distinct impression that he’d been hoping to run into me.

“Good morning, Alex,” he said.

I fumbled the rest of the way into Kael’s sweatshirt and tried flattening and finger-combing the tangles from my hair. “Morning!” I replied, as casually and cheerfully as I could manage.

“Vanessa told me I might find you here.”

“Um, yeah. I was just…Kael and I were up late talking, and…”

He held up a hand to stop me. “I don’t need details, actually.”

“Oh…well, good. I mean, not that there’s anything worth telling.”

“Something tells me Vanessa will be disappointed to hear that, eh?” He grinned as he said it, but there was no amusement in his eyes, and his voice was completely serious when he said, “I do have to say, though, that I myself find it rather…odd. Your fascination with him, that is. And the relationship the two of you seem to share.”

I stopped trying to work through a particularly nasty tangle. “Why is it odd?”

“Because. Vanessa told me some of your two’s history…and you know some of his past, it seems? You know who his father is?”

I sighed. I was sort of afraid to ask what else Vanessa and him had talked about. There was no telling with her, really.

“Valkos isn’t his real father,” I said.

“True,” Carrick agreed. But he didn’t look like he thought it made a difference. He hesitated just a moment before adding, “He was quite the obedient son, though, once upon a time. He did a lot in his “father’s” name. Things he hasn’t detailed to you, I’m sure.”

“I know,” I said quietly. What else could I say? I knew what sort of horrible “things” he was hinting at, and I knew he was telling the truth.

“I could tell you stories, you know.”

I fought down the wave of defensiveness threatening to rise inside me. I didn’t want him talking about Kael like this, but something was holding my normally explosive temper in check. I didn’t want to fight with Carrick. I don’t know why; I just didn’t. So instead of telling him to shut up and mind his own business, I just shoved my hands into the pockets of my sweatpants and said, “There’s nothing you could tell me that would be worse than things I’ve already imagined, alright?”

He frowned.
